Air passenger will nearly double to 7.8 billion according to the international air transport association 2036 forecast (1), which means that the rate of air traffic will increase exponentially leading to signicant congestion, flight delays, and pollution. To keep these numbers of aircrafts at safe distances from each other, to direct them during takeoff and landing from airports, to guide them around bad weather and ensure that traffic flows smoothly with minimal delays; there is a need of new control techniques, and optimized methods.

The optimization and automation of air traffic control have been the subject of several studies in the last decades. The objective of this paper is to review systematically current research in the literature about the automation and optimization of air traffic control systems.
