      <Abstract>The main purpose of this survey is to understand the critical steps and challenges in applying Natural Language Processing in the healthcare industry. Natural Language Processing could eliminate many inefficiencies in the delivery of healthcare. However certain key challenges need to be understood and problem solved before full value of Natural Language Processing is realized. Each step of applying Natural Language Processing to health record data has its own challenges to resolve. None of them are simple to address. Especially the pragmatic use of language in healthcare setting is markedly different from other industries.</Abstract>
