Abstract:

This paper proposes a new optimization algorithm which is based on the law of gravity and mass interactions called Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) for optimal design of power system stabilizers (PSS). The parameters of the proposed GSA based PSS (GSAPSS) are formulated as amulti objective optimization problem and optimized in order to damp all the unstable electromechanical modes of the system and to shift them to the left in S-plane. The performance of the proposed GSAPSS is tested on the WSCC 3-machine, 9-bus power system under different operating conditions and system configurations. The test results are compared with conventional PSS (CPSS) and Genetic Algorithm based PSS (GAPSS) to validate the efficacy and superiority of the proposed approach.
